Our American Flag
Flag Etiquette
How to Properly Display the American Flag
1. The U.S. flag should occupy a place of prominence when being displayed. A torn or
tattered flag should never be displayed.
2. No other flags displayed with it (state flags, etc.) should be larger or hung higher than
the U.S. flag. If the U.S. flag is displayed at half-mast, then all other flags must also be
flown at half-mast.
3. The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground, nor should it be dipped in
salute to any other flag, person or object.
4. When flown on a flagpole, the union (blue field with white stars) must be displayed
at the top of the staff and to the left. Any flags sharing the same flagpole must be
flown below it.
5. When displaying the flag at half-mast, the proper procedure is to hoist the flag
to the peak of the pole, then lower it to half-staff. When lowering the flag, it should
again be hoisted to the peak and then lowered.
6. When displayed on a wall, the flag should be placed with the union in the upper
left corner as the audience faces the flag, and should always be above and behind
the speakers' podium. If not centered, the flag should be displayed to the audience's
left when displayed in a church or auditorium.
7. The flag should never be hung upside-down, except in times of emergency to
signal distress or danger.
8. The flag should not be displayed in bad weather, unless it is a weatherproof flag
designed for all types of weather.
9. The flag should only be flown from sunrise to sunset. If it is flown at night, it
should be properly illuminated.
